Knee Replacement Surgery

What Is Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee replacement surgery (also known as knee arthroplasty) is used to alleviate knee pain caused by arthritis, trauma, and overuse injuries. The procedure involves replacing all or part of the damaged knee joint with a prosthetic joint typically made of plastic, metal, or ceramic. Once healed, the new joint will glide smoothly during movement — restoring function to the leg and quality of life to the patient.

Knee Replacement Surgery Candidates

While knee replacement surgery is most common for patients 50+ years of age who are living with diseases, degenerative conditions, or severe injuries that impact normal knee function and quality of life, there is in fact no age minimum/maximum or set of hard and fast rules that alone define who is/is not a candidate for knee replacement surgery. That’s why surgical screening must be conducted on a case-by-case basis.

At Atlantic Orthopaedics, our surgical screening process starts with a full clinical evaluation of your knee pain, health history, family health history, and lifestyle. Our doctors use this information and information gathered from any advanced imaging that is ordered – like x-rayEMG, ultrasoundMRI, CT Scan – to determine a diagnosis and recommended treatment plan. In most cases, we will always try to treat your knee pain without surgical intervention first and knee replacement surgery will only be advised if you have not, or it is determined you will not, respond to other preventative options like rest, anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, or injections.

No matter your case, you can be assured our teams will work openly and diligently with you, your PCP, other healthcare professionals or services, and your family or loves ones to clearly explain the benefits, risks, and recovery outlook related to the treatment option we may recommend.

Prior to surgery, you will undergo a full clinical evaluation to inform your care and avoid complications.

During surgery — after an appropriate type of anesthesia is carefully administered — your surgeon will make an incision in the knee to access damaged bone, tendon, and tissue. The size and location of the incision will depend on the approach used: robotic-assisted or conventional. The surgeon then removes the damaged or diseased cartilage and bone and replaces it with a replica implant.

While surgery is often a daunting and scary idea, our providers are here with you every step of the way. Talk to one of our expert physicians to help establish your treatment plan today. Call us at 603-431-1121 (Portsmouth, NH) or 207-363-3490 (York, ME).

You will be monitored by hospital support staff until the anesthesia wears off after your surgery. Some patients are eligible to go home day-of surgery, others within one to two days.

Once discharged, proper recovery is a critical component to longterm surgical success. Post-operative protocols will vary amongst patients, but typically include:

  • Daily movement
  • Wound care management
  • Medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Infection prevention
  • Post-Op follow up with the surgeon

Recovery time will range depending on the surgical approach used, your body’s response to the procedure, and your commitment to your prescribed post-operative care routine. Talk to one of our doctors to help establish your recovery plan: 603-431-1121 (Portsmouth, NH) or 207-363-3490 (York, ME).
